2016 came as a lot of surprises for us! From Donald Trump’s presidency to Leonardo Dicaprio's Oscar, we’ve seen a lot of things this year. Below are the top 8 best things that happened in 2016 which probably I bet you didn’t know!

1.Ozone Layer is Healing

The team of Scientists at MIT found that this year's ozone hole has shrunk by more than 4 million square kilometres — about half the area of the contiguous United States — since 2000 when ozone depletion was at its peak. The team also showed for the first time that this recovery has slowed somewhat at times, due to the effects of volcanic eruptions from year to year. Overall, the ozone hole appears to be on a healing path.

2. An Afghan teacher has been delivering books via bicycle

A teacher in Afghanistan turned his bike into a mobile library and cruises the countryside giving kids a chance to read. Saber Hosseini loads his bicycle with hundreds of books every weekend and pedals to villages who don’t have schools. 3. Volunteers in India planted 50 million trees in 24 hours created new World Record

Indian officials have reported that volunteers planted a whopping 50 million tree saplings on July 11, blowing past the previous record of 847,257 which was set by Pakistan in 2013.
800,000 volunteers from Uttar Pradesh worked for 24 hours planting 80 different species of trees along roads, railways, and on public land.
“The world has realised that serious efforts are needed to reduce carbon emissions to mitigate the effects of global climate change,” Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said at an event promoting the planting.

4. Global Wild Tiger Population Increases

After a century of constant decline, the number of wild tigers is on the rise! According to the most recent data, around 3,890 tigers now exist in the wild—up from an estimated 3,200 in 2010. “This is a pivotal step in the recovery of one of the world’s most endangered and iconic species,” said Ginette Hemley, senior vice president of wildlife conservation at WWF. “Together with governments, local communities, philanthropists, and other NGOs, we’ve begun to reverse the trend in the century-long decline of tigers. But much more work and investment is needed if we are to reach our goal of doubling wild tiger numbers by 2022”

5. The JUNO Spacecraft reached Jupiter After an almost five-year journey to the solar system’s largest planet, NASA's Juno spacecraft successfully entered Jupiter’s orbit during a 35-minute engine burn. “With Juno, we will investigate the unknowns of Jupiter’s massive radiation belts to delve deep into not only the planet’s interior but into how Jupiter was born and how our entire solar system evolved.” said NASA administrator Charlie Bolden

6. Solar Impulse 2 Aircraft travels entire world with zero fuel

Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg succeeded in their crazy dream of achieving the first ever Round-The-World Solar Flight. By landing back in Abu Dhabi after a total of 23 days of flight and 43'041 km travelled in a 17 leg journey, Solar Impulse 2 (Si2) has proven that clean technologies can achieve the impossible.
Piccard said “It is a very, very special moment – it has been 15 years that I am working on this goal. “I hope people will understand that it is not just a first in the history of aviation, but also a first in the history of energy”.

7. PokemonGo

Pokemon Go was the top trending game worldwide this year on the search giant Play store, where people can download apps, games, music, movies and books. The game has been downloaded 130 million times since its initial launch on 6 July 2016. That means there are roughly 30 million more Pokémon Go players than the current population of Philippines. It took just 20 days to gross $100 million in revenue - the fastest time a mobile game has ever achieved this in its first month since launch.
